Ephemerous

The short version

Ephemerous collects nothing. There are no accounts, no advertising, no analytics, no trackers, and no third-party SDKs. I receive no data about you or your use of the app — none, ever.

Location

If you grant location access, Ephemerous uses your coordinates to draw the sky as it truly appears from where you stand — your horizon, your twilight, your stars. This happens entirely on your device.

Your location is never transmitted to me or to anyone else. It is not stored on any server. You can refuse location access and still use the app: it simply falls back to a default position, and you can move the map anywhere on Earth by hand.

What the app stores

The objects you Remember, and the position the app was last looking from, are saved on your device. If you have iCloud enabled, they also sync through your own iCloud account so your sky matches across your devices.

That sync is between you and Apple. The data lives in your private iCloud storage; I have no access to it and no ability to read it.

Constellation stories

On devices that support Apple Intelligence, the origin story for a constellation is written by Apple's on-device model. The request and its response never leave your device, and nothing about it is sent to me. On every other device the app shows a fixed, hand-written line instead.

Widgets and Apple Watch

The Home Screen widgets and the Apple Watch app read the same on-device data as the app itself. They send nothing anywhere.

Network

The only network activity Ephemerous causes is Apple's own iCloud sync of the items described above, on your behalf. The app has no backend, and I operate no servers.

Children

Ephemerous is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.

Removing your data

Deleting the app removes everything it stored on that device. To clear the synced copy as well, turn Ephemerous off in Settings › [your name] › iCloud, or delete the app from all your devices.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the revised version will be posted on this page with a new date. Since the app collects nothing, any change is likely to be a clarification rather than a change in practice.
